Minnetonka Lakers capture 2008 NSSBL state championship

The Minnetonka Lakers, Classic League regular season champions, marched through the field to win the fourth annual North Star Senior Baseball League state tournament, culminating with a come-from-behind thriller of a 5-4 victory over the Cinderella Burnsville Bulldogs, who were seeded 12th. Burnsville arrived via an exciting pool play opener when the Bulldogs trailed Eden Prairie Padres 10-1 before pulling out an 11-10 victory.

En route to the Class AAA championship, the Lakers won their pool with lopsided victories over Crosstown Traffic 14-2 and Eden Prairie Lions Tap 11-0, then mowed down Apple Valley 6-3, Monticello 10-2 and the Bulldogs to win the first tournament featuring the combined North Star and Classic League format.

The Minnetonka Saints defeated Woodbury’s Warriors 6-3 for the Class AA championship and the Northfield Millers tripped Crosstown Traffic 3-2 for the Class A championship.

The NSSBL took on a new look this year when managers voted 15-0 at its annual meeting Feb. 20, to accept a "merger-expansion proposal" with the Classic League.

This created a 24-team NSSBL. To implement the expansion for 2008, the 16 NSSBL teams played a round robin schedule of 15 games each with three wildcard games each against teams from the 9-team Classic League. North Star managers agreed to implement rules allowing liberal defensive substitution and a roster or shared batting order.

Merger-expansion strengthens the visibility, image and competition in the NSSBL launches its fourth season. Mayer won the first two championships, and the first-year Freeport Grey Sox made quite a statement for their first season in 2007.

This past season, the NSSBL and Classic League played separate schedules, plus three wild card games each. Managers of both leagues will be meeting in the coming weeks to determine the direction of the 2009 season. NSSBL managers meeting Tuesday, Sept. 23, at 7 p.m. in the St. Louis Park Rec Center pavilion.

The NSSBL uses wood bats, full count, 3 outs, 7 innings. Players and managers of other teams interested in joining the North Star Senior Baseball League may contact NSSBL President Pat Thompson at 952-470-1864 or Secretary-Treasurer Pete Chubb at 952-546-1775.
